GRAND PRIX PINEWOOD DERBY 2006 EVENT INFORMATION

Weigh-in and Inspection Night
All cars will be weighed in and inspected on Thursday, January 26th at 6:30.
CARS SHOULD HAVE THEIR ASSIGNED RACE NUMBER VISIBLE.
The Scouts name can be placed on the bottom.
If a car is less than 5 ounces or fails to meet any of the rules the scout can modify the car that night.
Weigh your cars ahead of time to speed the Weigh in process. You can go to the post office to use their scale. Bring extra weights and a way to add them that night. You want to be as close to 5 ounces as possible without going over.
The cars will be 'impounded' until Friday nights race.

Racing and Awards:
We will run a separate race bracket for Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos scouts. All participants will be awarded a patch and pocket certificate.
The three fastest racers in each den will be awarded a custome car stand.
The three fastest car in each den will run in a Championship bracket at the end of the night.
The six fastest cars in the pack will recieve trophies.
There will also be a trophy for best in show.
The cars will be judged for excellence in several design and craftsmanship for each den.

To avoid any confusion, we are adopting the Kempsville District Official Pinewood Derby Rules for 2006.

KEMPSVILLE DISTRICT
OFFICIAL PINEWOOD DERBY RULES

Derby Day: Saturday, March 4, 2006
Derby Location: St. Gregory the Great Catholic School Gymnasium
5345 Virginia Beach Blvd. (Across from Haynes Furniture Store)

Car Specifications:
1. Width - 2 ¾ inches
2. Length - 7 inches
3. Gross Weight - shall not exceed 5 ounces
4. Width between wheels - 1 ¾ inches
5. Clearance between car bottom and track - no less than 3/8 inch
6. Height - 3 inches maximum (finish line gate will obstruct a taller car)

Car Rules:
1. Wheel bearings, washers, bushings and springs are prohibited.
2. Only official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels and axles are permitted.
3. The car shall be freewheeling with no starting device(s).
4. Only dry type lubricant is permitted. (i.e. graphite)
5. Wheels and axles may not be altered. Wheels and axles may be polished to remove imperfections. No changes to the size or shape of the wheels and axles are permitted.
6. The entire car must line up behind the starting post.
7. Weights must be fastened securely and paint shall be dry.

Derby Rules:
1. Cars shall be inspected to assure that none of the specification limitations have been exceeded. After being inspected, all cars will be placed in the "paddock" (impound) area and no further adjustments will be allowed.
2. Only Racers and Derby Officials are permitted inside the impound area or track areas.
3. Races will be run by rank - Tiger Cubs, Wolf, Bear, Webelos (Grade 4), Webelos (Grade 5) and an overall final.
4. Scoring shall be as follows: each car in each rank will run on all lanes; thereby assuring that no one car will have a "better lane advantage" over any other car. An average running time for each car will then be calculated to determine its running time. The first, second and third place cars of each rank will be determined by the fastest averaged running time for each car. The first, second and third place cars of each rank shall advance to the overall finals to determine the first, second and third place cars of the district. The finals will be run the same as the rank races.
5. Cars that jump the track two (2) times will be disqualified.
6. In the event of a car's breakdown, five (5) minutes will be allotted for repairs, under the supervision of a Derby Official.
7. Protests shall be brought to the attention of the Derby Officials immediately. No protests will be allowed after the start of the next race.
8. All decisions of the Derby Officials shall be final. The Council will not mediate protests.
